The Lindvart Park Multi-Sport Facility in Kaikohe is a game-changer for the local community. Developed by Kaikohe and Districts Sportsville in partnership with the Far North District Council, this $14.8 million project provides a much-needed indoor sports hub for the region. Designed by ĀKAU Studio, the facility includes two courts, a gym space, offices, a meeting room, and changing facilities, creating a versatile space for sports, cultural events, and community gatherings. More than just a sports venue, it’s a place where people of all ages can come together, whether for a game, a kapa haka performance, or a regional event.
Arcwell was brought into the project early to supply, fabricate, and install the structural steel framework. Originally designed with cross-laminated timber, the structure was re-engineered to incorporate steel, delivering significant cost savings without compromising strength or durability. Given the site's location on a floodplain, Canam Construction devised an innovative solution using raised ground beams to lift the building and provide a stable foundation. The flexibility of steel allowed for open, unobstructed spaces, maximizing the functionality of the courts and ensuring efficient construction.
A key focus of the project was celebrating Kaikohe’s rich cultural heritage. ĀKAU Studio worked closely with the community, running workshops with local tamariki to develop ideas that reflected the area’s history and identity. The entrance features an eye-catching canopy with grooved plywood soffits, and three striking rakau (warrior spears) stand tall, symbolizing the return of warriors from battle. Māori motifs are woven throughout the design, inspired by Papahawaiki—a waterway that once ran through the site—honoring the past while creating a space for future generations.
This facility is more than just a sports complex; it’s an investment in Kaikohe’s future. By using steel, the project not only gained cost efficiencies but also ensured long-term durability with minimal maintenance. With modern amenities, a strong cultural presence, and a design that puts the community first, Lindvart Park will be a vital hub for sport, connection, and celebration for years to come.
