Te Iwitahi
Whangārei’s Te Iwitahi Civic Centre stands as a landmark of modern civic architecture, blending sustainability, cultural heritage, and innovative construction practices. Designed to serve as a welcoming and functional hub for the community, the building consolidates the Whangārei District Council’s operations into a single, purpose-built space. It embodies a strong cultural narrative, developed in partnership with local hapū and rōpū kaumātua, and features design elements that reflect both Māori traditions and the city’s natural surroundings. The centre has been recognized for its architectural excellence, winning multiple awards for its innovative and community-focused design.
The project was delivered with a strong emphasis on sustainability and local engagement. Awarded Beacon status by the Construction Sector Accord, the development prioritized procurement innovation, transparency, and training opportunities for the local workforce. With over 80% of trades and suppliers sourced locally, it provided significant employment and skills development within the Northland region. Arcwell Engineering is proud to have contributed to this legacy, ensuring that our craftsmanship aligns with the project's high standards and long-term vision.
While Te Iwitahi is a showcase of structural achievement, Arcwell Engineering’s expertise in secondary metalwork played a vital role in enhancing the building’s functionality and aesthetics. Our team was responsible for the fabrication and installation of the corten steel planter boxes, which contribute to the building’s striking exterior, as well as the intricate stainless steel mesh netting on the exterior staircases. Inside, we installed the illuminated stainless steel handrails that span the main atrium’s staircases, seamlessly combining durability with elegance to enhance both safety and visual appeal.
Our involvement in Te Iwitahi continues our strong partnership with Canam Construction, with whom we have collaborated on multiple high-profile projects. The success of this development further cements our reputation for delivering precision metalwork on complex and award-winning builds.
